Norway Baseball has been written about in newspapers across the
country including USA Today, Baseball Weekly, The Saturday Evening
Post and Sports Illustrated. Sixteen kids went on to play in some
level of professional baseball. About a third played in college. For
a town of less than 600, this defied statistical odds. So many
professional scouts came to Norway that they held tryout camps there
every spring.
Kent Stock remembers reading about Norway baseball as a kid. After
playing baseball in high school and college he accepts a teaching
position in nearby Belle Plaine. In 1990 Kent has a chance to work
for Jim Van Scoyoc, longtime Norway head coach. From working on the
field to hitting fly balls to the state championship game, it's the
best summer of Kent's life.
In 1991 Coach Van Scoyoc fulfills a dream by accepting a job as a
pitching coach in the Detroit Tigers minor league system. Kent is
appointed head coach for Norway in what is doomed to be its final
season as Norway is merging with a neighboring school district due
to state cutbacks.
A former athlete himself, Kent must win over his players and
convince them and himself that he can fill their former coach's
shoes and that they can go out winners. He's determined,
hard-working, insightful and not afraid of a challenge. The Final
Season is a story of both a dying part of Americana and undying
determination of will.
The Final
Season is a film about a young man caught in the
struggle between tradition and progress - between a future filled
with security or uncertainty - and a community's struggle to save
its identity in the face of overwhelming opposition. The Final
Season tells the story of a team that wouldn't give up. In the
summer of 1991 Norway High's baseball tradition ended on a
triumphant but somber note and great losses were repaired, at least
for one shining moment.
